The Northern Ireland Institute of Human Relations are proud to present a special viewing of  The Man Who Fell to Earth, followed by analysis by Dr Eve Watson. The event takes place at 11 am on the 29th of October at the Strand Arts Centre on the Holywood Road.

The late David Bowie stars as the Man Who Fell to Earth, an alien sent to our planet to secure water for his dying homeworld.  Nicolas Roeg and Paul Mayersberg’s 1976 cult classic is a provocative examination of alienation, as well as what it means to be ‘human‘.

As part of their regular Halloween movie series, the Northern Ireland Institute of Human Relations have organised a special viewing of the film, which will be followed by a talk from Dr Eve Watson. Drawing on years of academic study and psychotherapy practice, as well as a personal interest in the works of Bowie, Dr. Watson will be examining the film’s themes from a psychoanalytic perspective.

“It is super that the Northern Ireland Institute of Human Relations has organised a special film screening of The Man Who Fell to Earth,” she said; “I’m delighted to speak about these themes and others and hope it will be of interest to people. We invite anyone who is interested (no expertise at all necessary!) to come along and participate.”

The Northern Ireland Institute of Human Relations is a professional forum for psychoanalytic psychotherapists and those working in related mental health fields to pursue their continuing professional development. It was formed in 1990 to further the professional development of psychoanalytic psychotherapists across Northern Ireland.

Mary Cairns, Vice Chair of the Institute said “This year we are delighted to be welcoming Eve back again at Halloween, this time to help us decipher the enigmatic Bowie in his strange and unsettling film ‘The Man who fell to Earth’. In the evocative setting of the oldest cinema in Belfast, we are intrigued to be digging into this cult-film on its 40th anniversary (first released in 1976) and exploring ‘The Uncanny’, both in the film and in the character of ‘Bowie’.

Tickets are priced at £12/£8 concession. For more information, or to buy tickets visit strandartscentre.com or phone 02890655830
