NIGHTCRAWLER is a pulse-pounding thriller set in the nocturnal underbelly of contemporary Los Angeles. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Lou Bloom, a driven young man desperate for work who discovers the high-speed world of L.A. crime journalism. Finding a group of freelance camera crews who film crashes, fires, murder and other mayhem, Lou muscles into the cut-throat, dangerous realm of nightcrawling — where each police siren wail equals a possible windfall and victims are converted into dollars and cents. Aided by Rene Russo as Nina, a veteran of the blood-sport that is local TV news, Lou thrives. In the breakneck, ceaseless search for footage, he becomes the star of his own story.

I had heard good things about this movie, but other than that knew very little about it, I find for decent movies this is a good thing.  For ‘Nightcrawler’ it was a particularly good thing, as I never knew where the story was going or where it would take me. I liked the fact that it did surprise me, even when I thought I knew what sort of movie this was going to be it turned out not to be, this happened all the way to the end. Jake Gyllenhaal looks like a man who hasn’t seen the sun in years, he’s not exactly weedy looking but there’s definitely a gaunt pathetic look about him. He looks slimey and he acts accordingly.  He’s basically a man without morals whose willing to do anything to make a quick buck, he’s exploitative, ruthless and ultimately deadly.  This is not a feel good movie, but it is a good movie and I would recommend it.
