What’s better than a bit of entertainment and a spot of lunch for only £6 to break up the monotony of work? Well, if that entertainment is provided by three of Northern Ireland’s newest generation of up and coming comedians, then your lunch time is pretty much sorted.

Ruaidhrí WardOn Friday 24th January, as part of the Out To Lunch Festival, The Whinge, The Nordie & The Geek took to the stage to the Black Box for some good old fashion stand up comedy. With a delicious bowl of chilli in hand (provided by Hadskis) we sat down to a trio of Northern Irish delights.

First up, The Whinge – Ruaidhrí Ward seems like the kind of man who would make light of any situation, no matter how bad, and he kicks things off with a few quips about growing up in Belfast. At first, Ruaidhrí’s comedy seems quite gentle, but as he embarks on a presentation of Northern Irish murals I found myself actually crying with laughter.

Next, The Geek – Monaghan’s own Lorcan McGrane awkwardly stood before us, displaying his introvert ways and discussing the hardships of a grown man (who loves comic books, sic-fi and everything a grown man shouldn’t) trying to find a woman. McGrane’s comedy is actually quite fresh, his style is unusual and awkward and his small-town personality definitely works in Northern Ireland.

The final course of the afternoon was The Nordie – Shane Todd, the fresh faced North Down comedian bounded on to the stage with a confidence that would either work incredibly well, or not at all. Luckily for him, it worked a treat. With elaborate and intricately told anecdotes of embarrassing and quite frankly, odd situations (like how he ended up with an entire Snickers ice cream in his shoe) Todd charmed his way through his set. My personal favourite was his story about the ‘pinchy pinch’ which will haunt me forever…
