I’m just going to start this review by saying that I honestly think that Fish City has given me the best fish and chips I have ever tasted. I have returned since this initial time and had a battered sausage supper and it was equally as good, my wife had the fish and chips this time and was just as impressed.

Fish City is a new ‘Chippy’ style restaurant that has opened on the old KFC site on Ann st.  It is decorated like a really nice fisherman’s hideaway. – a solid nautical theme that doesn’t get hampered by going over the top. Our server was prompt, polite and really informative, he was an English gentleman and we don’t even mark him down for that ;).  While in Rome do as the Romans do they say, so I ordered the Fish and Chips “The Real thing”. I ordered the haddock over cod as I find it a tastier fish on the whole, although I’ll admit there’s not a lot of difference.  My Fish and Chips came quickly and looked gorgeous.  With the fish stacked high, the chips spilling out of a wee fryer basket and the home made tartar and mushy peas in tiny metal Dishes.  The fish was super crunchy with a light to medium batter that stopped it being stodgy.  It tasted salty and fishy and really melted in your mouth.  The chips were on a par, cooked just right and had a tremendous colour.  The Mushy peas and tartar were great accompaniments and it made me wonder if I had ever had real homemade tartar before because it was so good.

We’ve all had fish and chips before and we know there’s a world of difference between the good and the bad.  Well, this is good, like super good. It’s a real welcome addition, to a scene that has been lacking in sit-in options for more traditional fare done exactly right for a while.

I really enjoyed my trip to Fish City, I think I’ll be back.
