Yes you read the title correctly… not only does something as wonderful as a European Cheese Symposium exist, it’s winging its way to Belfast for 2016 and will take place at the Merchant Hotel on the 10th May.

Part of the “Cheese Up Your Life” campaign from the European Milk Forum, the symposium features international experts including an archaeologist, food historian, super–taster, neuroscientist and dairy marketing specialists will explore our European cheese culture – past, present and future including:

  • History of cheese – from the prehistoric origins of cheese–making in Ireland and continental Europe through the Medieval high point to the 17th and 18th century decline and modern revival.
  • Science of taste – exploring the scientific basis of what makes cheese delicious including new and innovative sensory evaluations, flavour maps and food pairings
  • Cheese culture in Europe today – current consumption patterns and trends,  the place of cheese in a modern lifestyle and opportunities for the future.

The symposium will be chaired by cook and food writer Trish Destine and will begin at 9.30am, and finish at 1.15pm with a buffet lunch (we can only hope there will be cheese).

The event is completely free, but spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To reserve your space fill out the booking form here or send your details over to cheese@dairycouncil.co.uk.
