Quite a few notable releases this week. More than a few actually. The scores are even so far so it’s anyone’s game. Check out all the best streaming choices this week and see who’s been awarded ‘Pick of the Week’.

The Wicker Man (2006) – Nic Cage running about an Island of  getting into all kinds of scrapes with secret cults etc. There’s also that big burning ban thing. Not as good as the original obviously but might be worth a go for the madness that is Cage. A reclusive lawman (Nicolas Cage) travels to a secluded island to search for a girl who has gone missing. Once there, he discovers sinister forces at work among the island’s secretive residents, including strange sexual rituals, a harvest festival and possible human sacrifice.

Welcome To The Punch – Mixed reviews for this one but Mark Strong and James McAvoy are always very watchable. When a notorious criminal is forced to return to London, it gives a veteran detective one final chance to bring the man to justice.

Marco Polo (TV, season 2) – Marco Polo’s back again. It’s not a bad little show, especially if you like things where people are all dressed up like olden days.

Green Lantern – Ryan Reynolds is a big green CGI man with a magic ring. He can fly into space and do battle with Mark Strong. It’s like a commercial for Green Lantern toys and makes no sense. It’s um not without it’s charm though.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet star in this navel gazing nonsense about removing the memory of painful relationships from you mind. Turns out it’s actually pretty good.

Looper – Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Bruce Willis who plays Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays Bruce Willis in this story of time travelers who kill people. Its complicated so here’s the synopsis. In a future society, time-travel exists, but it’s only available to those with the means to pay for it on the black market. When the mob wants to eliminate someone, it sends the target into the past, where a hit man known as a looper lies in wait to finish the job. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is one such hired gun, and he does his job well — until the day his bosses decide to “close the loop” and send Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) back in time to be killed.

Project X – 3 teenagers throw a party that no one will ever forget. There’s drinking and drugs and a flame thrower.

Waiting – Young Ryan Reynolds and Anna Farris wait tables with hilarious consequences.

24 (season 1-8) – For those that havent seen it, now is probably a good time to check it out. All 8 seasons are up here to binge on (192 episodes). Kiefer Sutherland is agent Jack Bauer and he has 24 hours to complete his mission in real time. I’m guessing he doesn’t get a lot of sleep during each series.

Pick of the Week – Amazon Prime – Godzilla

godzilla

Amazon came in strong this week with a glut of decent shows and movies. Netflix just couldn’t keep up and now the final blow has been struck by Gareth Edwards reboot of that monster movie classic, Godzilla. There’s a few missteps but it’s a vast improvement in the last Hollywood remake, not to mention the fact that he actually gets to battle some other big beasties.

Netflix 1: Amazon 2
