We’ve got updates on Gambit, Doom, Super Mario Maker, The Good Dinosaur, Hunger Games, X-Men, Fantastic 4 and the Seth Rogen/ Joseph Gordon-Levitt film ‘The Night Before’. Trailers and everything. Plus what to watch on Netflix so lets dive in!

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2

I’ve not really followed The Hunger Games, probably because I’m not a female girl. It all just seems like background noise to me but there’s a new trailer out for the ‘epic conclusion’ to the ‘global phenomenon’.
There’s explosions and archery and Jennifer Lawrence. I guess I like all those things, maybe I should go back and watch the whole series to get myself pumped up for this. I think I’ve seen the first one so maybe if I close all the curtains and take a day to just watch them all I could get excited for this.

The Good Dinosaur

Do you have kids? If you do then you’ll have to go see the latest Pixar offering regardless of what it is. If you don’t have kids you might want to see a trailer first so you can decide whether it’s worth your money. The Good Dinosaur is set in a world that skews a little closer to what fundamentalist Christians would have you believe. You didn’t think i’d go there in a bit about a Pixar cartoon did ya? Well I did. Its a world where dinosaurs and humans live side by side. That asteroid never struck earth. The animation looks hyper real for the background stuff and hyper cartoony for the dinosaurs and cave people (I’m so politically correct) and stuff. It looks weird and the trailer makes it all look a little too whimsical. It doesn’t look like another ‘Up’ but how many ‘Carl Fredricksen’ toys do they really sell? Kids love dinosaurs and dinosaur toys’ll sell. That’s just me being cynical of course but you wont let me be politically incorrect and call ’em cave men so to hell with it.

X-Men Fantastic 4 Crossover

x-men-fantastic-fourA crossover involving Fox’s X-Men and Fantastic 4? Both sets of characters in the same movie? In the same world? Interacting with each other? That would be madness? who’s idea was this? That’s like combining Iron Man and Captain America in the same movie and throwing Hulk and Thor in for good luck! It’ll never work! Next thing you know they’ll be making a Batman v Superman movie!

Bryan Singer was talking with ‘Yahoo! Movies’ (Yahoo! is still a thing?) and he mentioned that crossover notions between X-Men and Fantastic 4 ‘in play’.  He went on to say that “we’ll have to see how the films turn out”, and that “to just say you’re going to do it would be a mistake, you have to see how the films evolve before you make that decision to completely commit to that”.

Gambit

Remember that Gambit movie that was definitely happening with Channing Tatum? Well its due to start production in a couple of months and we’ve just heard this morning that Tatum may be quitting the project. This all sounds like madness as he was at comic-con just a few weeks ago promoting it. No further information on why he may be quitting, just Tatum’s reps admitting “something is up”. Look forward to this all blowing over after a few weeks of wild speculation on why he may be leaving. I’ll help get the ball rolling. I heard that it’s because C-Tates wanted to do all his own stunts including using Gambit’s X-Men powers for real. The studio is refusing to actually mutate Channing for the part preferring instead to put a stunt double in the microwave until he got kinetic charging powers. It’s some sort of insurance thing. I also heard another guy say it’s because  Channing  wanted to use his own deck of cards (did i mention that Gambit throws playing cards as a weapon?) as per his contract but it turns out that his deck consisted only of business cards for ‘C-Tates Strip-o-gym’. A gym that Tatum runs on the side which involves a lot of Magic Mike style stripping while working out. So either one of those.

The Night Before

It’s finally here! It’s the trailer for ‘The Night Before’! Never heard of it? Me neither. It does look like it could be some fun though. It’s from the guys that brought us 50/50 (with Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as well as the films mentioned in the trailer and is about Jews on Christmas (sorta). It’s starring the 50/50 duo again plus the Falcon himself Anthony Mackie. It made me laugh so give it a go. 50/50 is still on Netflix by the way and worth a watch.

Doom

doomAt QuakeCon ‘id Software’ dropped a few details on their new Doom game. We all remember Doom in it’s hay day, right? You’re a space marine in some kind of space maze, blowing monsters to bits with a space shot gun. The Rock even made a real shoddy movie about it. Well its coming back. The new game aims to make you feel like “Bruce Lee with a shotgun on a skateboard” according to art director Hugo Martin. id Software also let us know that unlike most shooters they’ll not be having regenerative health. Why is this important? Speed apparently. “Not having regenerative health isn’t a random choice, it stems from movement,” said Marty Stratton, (executive producer) “Movement is king and you don’t want players stopping to regenerate health, you want them moving forward to see the resources of the game. That also leads to needing a lot of skill for players to get through the game. It does sound like they’re on the right track to bringing back the feel of the 90’s PC classic. Good luck lads, it’s time to see a new shooter that isn’t just a Halo/Call of Duty clone. Even if it is an old shooter.

Super Mario Maker

It’s fair to say the Wii U has been struggling in the popularity stakes. It hasn’t done nearly as well as its father console the Wii. It seems everyone and their granny had one of those and was playing tennis with grand kids. The Wii U, not so much. If you do happen to have one though, there’s a trailer out for a new Mario game that’s shaping up to be pretty interesting. It’s like build a bear factory but for Mario levels only you don’t have to buy the level a horrible little outfit after you make it.

Netflix

When I started this I thought I’d pick something new from the films that are new to Netflix each week. As it turns out there are a fair few films being added each week. So here’s my recommendations for four films that I think warrant your attention. Hows that for value? Not enough? Ok I’ll also add a pithy one line review.  The World’s End – one of the top 3 films in the Nick Frost and Simon Pegg Cornetto Trilogy. The Mighty Ducks – must see sequel to The Breakfast Club – Estevez over Sheen any day. National Treasure: Book of Secrets – not as good as the original but then it did have Mathew McConaughey in it. Pain and Gain – never seen it but it combines The Rock, Wahlberg and Micheal Bay in a ‘True Story’. Good luck with that.
