You Grew UpStarting life as an indie three piece, Mere Moths gained much local attention through their debut EP Water of the Land, yet soon disbanded when the young members began to grow up. Two years later, Mere Moths is now a solo endeavour, the perfect vehicle for 17 year old singer/songwriter Patrick Wright from Dromore to showcase his mature lyrics and deft musical abilities.

Recorded in Big Space Studios, Newry and mixed and mastered by Declan Legge, Mere Moths debut solo EP You Grew Up was released earlier this year, and features three acoustic tracks alongside one full band set.

The eponymous You Grew Up is a gentle one. Opening with the soft, almost sombre picks and plucks of an acoustic guitar, Patrick’s unique voice almost washes over you like a wave as his haunting lyrics give this track a nostalgic, atmospheric feel. Each of these tracks have a sort of echoey, ambient feel to them which gets more intriguing the more you hear it. These songs are subtle, simple yet complex – a testament to Patrick’s lyrical and musical talent at such a young age.

Musically Fight Me takes a different approach than the first track. While still retaining Mere Moth’s signature sound, this track is more confrontational and faster paced. It’s soulful and full of passion, which is mirrored by the guitar work which seems to have latin influences throughout.

Much shorter than the rest, My Fear is the last acoustic track on the EP. Another sombre and emotional track, Patrick lets his Northern Irish accent creep into certain aspects of this one – a welcome and interesting inclusion. This track also features some light percussion – also played by Patrick  – which is a good way to bridge the gap from the completely acoustic tracks to the full band set of Reassurance.

The full band helps to give Reassurance a much more rock vibe than the previous three tracks. After showing us that he can hold his own with nothing but his own voice and an acoustic guitar, the electric guitars and thumping drums of this track prove that whether he’s a solo artist, or part of a full band, Patrick Wright is a voice to be heard, and certainly one to watch out for.

You Grew Up is available now via Soundcloud or iTunes.
