As it goes, last monday was a fairly great day for the giraffe population in Northern Ireland.  As a new arrival literally dropped in, from a height of over 5 feet because Giraffes give birth standing up you see.  After a 15 month pregnancy the Rothschild giraffe (one of the most endangered of the nine subspecies of giraffe) was eager to give birth and now Mummy Neja and Daddy Finn are said to be delighted with their latest addition the baby girl giraffe named Ballymena.  Zookeeper Nick Simpson-Eyre said he was visiting friends a few months ago and was driving past Ballymena, “I thought to myself, Mena! What a lovely name”.  You can catch a wee video of the cutie here.
