We’ve mentioned Alley Cat a few times before, so now it’s time for the full blown review! Located on Church Lane, just beside Victoria Square this American themed restaurant is always close by for a burger, a cocktail, or just game of scrabble. Inside, there’s a mismatch of arm chairs, tables and furniture and the walls are spray painted with quotes and graffiti, it’s pretty cool actually. There’s also a sort of mezzanine area upstairs and outdoor seating if you’re feeling adventurous! There’s board games stacked up by the wall, live music by Stephen Macartney & Gentry Morris every Thursday night, a DJ every Friday and Saturday and live music by The El Dude Brothers on Sundays, so you won’t be short on something to keep you occupied.
Now, onto the most important part, the food. Burgers are what they do best, but to be perfectly honest, they do everything best – from their amazing chilli fries, to their signature Crack sauce, you’re in for a treat no matter what you get. Have a look at the menu here. I’d personally recommend the Smoked Bacon Double Cheese Burger which is all meat and no salad, just how a burger should be, and if you’re really hungry, add a portion of Texas Chilli Fries, or Bacon Fries (complete with Baconaise sauce…). Or if you’re a big fan of pulled pork, ask for a Pig Out – a beef patty, topped with pulled pork, onion rings and lettuce, what more could you ask for? There’s also a couple of vegetarian options for those inclined. As a side note, avoid the mozzarella sticks, they’re a bit heavy and the cheese is usually more solid than melted.
Another thing that Alley Cat is pretty well known for is their cocktails, served in a rustic tin cup, or if there’s a few of you, a teapot, these are unique to say the least. Storm in a Teapot, Cool Beans and F U Daiquiri are definite favourites, but if cocktails aren’t your thing, there’s a really extensive whiskey menu to tickle your fancy. For those teetotallers, they sometimes serve cherry coke which is always a plus!
Did I mention that they serve your food on a tray rather than on a plate, and your cutlery is stored in an empty cardboard beer holder? Finally, to top it all off, your bill comes in a little box, complete with mini calculator, magnifying glass and American candy – very creative.
Overall, Alley Cat is a unique and enjoyable experience, their drink choice is good and their food is even better. A definite must for anyone interested in something a little bit different.
