In our third week of our month long elements theme we look at fire and light. It’s hard to believe that all these photos were taken right here in NI as they have such a global feel, but they were. Here Neil tells you a bit more about them.

For this small series of images the subject is fire and light. Light is the primary ingredient in every photograph, without it we get black. I’ve included some ‘light painting’ images that employ burning wire wool to create beautiful fire images, some of these took up to ten minutes to expose correctly . I used torches to create the green flowers by painting out the shapes on a long exposure, like drawing on an invisible blackboard. I had the pleasure of photographing The celestial wedding of Venkateswara ( Indian Ceromony) in Belfast which had many prayers and practises revolving round the central ‘flame’, I’ve included one of those images. I also included the image of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (band) because the light is unusal and the main subject of the image rather than the musician.
