Cinemagic runs the 17th – 29th November this year and I have to say the quality of events they have on is breathtaking. I started this off as a Top 5 but had to expand to Top 10, and even that was hard enough! Kermode has his regular spot (for good reason) and David Arnold is stopping by to talk Cinemusic. There’s some wonderful films both domestic and foreign as well as a study of Nordic Noir and a look at how the BBFC works when classifying a film. You can learn animation and even make a movie in a day on your iPad, there’s also a showing of the original ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ film ( a particular favourite from my youth). All in all it’s a stellar line up and the guys at Cinemagic should be proud!
JACK AND THE CUCKOO CLOCK HEART
Edinburgh, late 19th century. Little Jack is born on a day so cold that his heart remains frozen. Madeleine the midwife saves his life by inserting a cuckoo clock in place of his defective heart. It will work, she warns him, as long as Jack observes three golden rules. First of all, he must never touch the hands of the clock. Secondly, he must control his anger. And last, but certainly not least, he must never, ever fall in love!
MOVIES GO MOBILE! IPAD MOVIE MAKING
Got an idea for a movie? Need a storyboard, camera crew, edit suite, special effects unit, title generator and soundtrack? This ultimate workshop in mobile movie making puts every film-making tool at your disposal so you can make your Hollywood blockbuster a reality. Using iPads and a host of creative apps you will storyboard, shoot, edit and showcase your movie all in one day.
GENRE STUDY: NORDIC NOIR WITH ROY STAFFORD
The workshop will aim to explore the distinctiveness of crime fiction films produced in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Finland) for both TV and the cinema and attempt to understand why they have garnered so much interest in the UK, Ireland and North America. As the title implies, these are crime stories which are dark and grim in theme. We will also explore the influence ‘Nordic Noir’ has had on homegrown productions made in the UK/Ireland including series such as Broadchurch and The Fall.
STOP MOTION WITH FLICKERPIX ANIMATIONS
The first part of this workshop is an interactive presentation that explains and shows a variety of storyboards used in traditional and digital stop motion animation, covering television series, commercials and feature films. This will be followed by a session on how to begin visualising a script and telling the story using the camera, characters and locations.
Californian high school cheerleader and fashion obsessive Buffy (Kristy Swanson) discovers she is next in a long line of vampire killers when a mythical stranger (Donald Sutherland) offers to show her how to use a stake! Uninterested at first, Buffy soon accepts her destiny and takes on the vampire king, Lothos (Rutger Hauer), after his henchmen begin attacking her and her boyfriend (Luke Perry). Written by Joss Whedon before his incredibly successful TV series of the same name!
