Following a nearly 20-year absence, the League of Gentlemen once appeared on our TV screens at Christmas and have since followed it up with a nationwide tour. On Saturday night that tour rolled into the SSE and put on a masterclass of giving the audience what they want. The Show opened with a stripped back set and Royston Vasey’s own theatre troupe ‘Legs Akimbo’ who, for the first half, ran through the greatest hits from the 3 series. This was brilliant to see and made for a real rapid fire of everything we’ve grown to love from LOG. The scenes/sketches were faithfully re-created (sans costumes and makeup) and had the crowd in an almost sing-a-long fashion to the likes of ‘Go-Jonny-go-go-go-go’ to ‘POP cracking onto his son’s girlfriends’ and so much in-between. A brilliant way to kick things off. After an interval, we got the full treatment, with an all-new continuation of the Royston Vasey mythos as we plunge, in earnest, deep into Royston Vasey – a fully formed story that included the townsfolk, complete with scenery, costumes, make-up and of course Tubbs and Edward and Papa Lazarou!
The guys brought the house down and haven’t missed a beat in 20 years, this tour made for a great excuse to re-watch the series and an even better excuse to finally see them live. If you do get the chance to go and see this show I would advise you to go Johnny go go go go!
