I think we can all agree that we’re currently stuck in a fashion limbo.
Once it hits the end of August, I can’t help but feel like summer trends start to feel a bit outdated and inapplicable – yet when it’s this muggy, no one wants to pick up that dreaded parka coat or even think about layering up.
In situations like these I find a basic t-shirt, leather jacket, jeans and Converse combo become my constant – and to be honest – I’m getting a little bored of my looks oozing the whole ‘uninspired’ and ‘irrelevant’ vibe. It’s time to get digging and discover what we can get excited about for the season ahead.
The best part about educating yourself on what to invest in for the new season is that you can still mix and match these new pieces with summer staples to see you through the rest of August right ‘til the end of September – meaning you’re boosting your cost per wear while still looking fresh and current.
So, to get ahead early, here are some of the top AW18 trends I think will rejuvenate your fashion creativity, and maybe help you not mind so much about that temperature drop…
Rust
Rust is the colour that epitomises autumn. Not only does it suit every skin tone and hair colour (even us redheads!), but it actually works well with loads of difficult colour combinations. The corduroy two-piece below for example – this would look gorgeous with a very SS18 on-trend polka dot top or even colour-blocked with pastel lilac or sky blue to give it a lift. This trend has plenty of room for experimentation in these tail-end weeks of summer right through to December with similarly-toned jewel shades such as teal, mustard, burgundy and even head-to-toe rust.
Animal print
A lot of people have a love/hate relationship when it comes to animal print. Personally, I feel like the lines are often blurred when it comes to what’s classy and what’s tacky. However, the patterns this season look much more streamlined and edgy, striking the perfect balance between slick eveningwear-appropriate and casual rock ‘n’ roll vibes. With the introduction of zebra, cow and dalmatian print – these monochrome-focused patterns make styling incredibly easy and versatile for those who are dabbling with the idea of animal print. Simply add a pop of colour to compliment!
For those who dare to go bold – try mixing different animal prints like the below snake print coat over a zebra print top or by rocking a full animal print co-ord. Or for a subtler approach, try breaking up the patterns by pairing a zebra print bag with a leopard print belt or a snake print skirt or boots.
Textured outerwear
If the below coats don’t make you want to snuggle up and pray for chillier weather – then I don’t know what will. Think plush, fluffy, fuzzy and faux fur – basically anything that resembles a teddy bear as this will add a touch of enviable cosiness to your outfit. If you’re wanting a timeless look with the added luxurious texture, go for either a stone/tan/black colour to ensure it will go with your entire wardrobe. If you’re wanting something head-turning and unique – this season it is all about pastels, especially pink and blue hues. While it isn’t cold enough to brave these coats at the moment, come September time simply pop on over a t-shirt to start making the most of the trend.
Heavy florals
Its no surprise that florals are making a comeback this AW18, but instead of minimalistic ditsy prints, think: ‘the bigger, the better’.
This time around, florals are reinvented with bigger prints and bolder colours on a black or dark base to honour the winter season. To start rocking this trend now, pick one of the colours featured in your floral piece (preferably one of the lighter colours) and wear a top or bag to compliment like the below outfit. Another way to keep it summery is to add white trainers/heels. When transitioning into autumn, simply add biker boots and a deep red lip and you have the whole ‘rock ‘n’ rose’ look nailed. You could also embrace full head-to-toe floral or clashing florals for an elegant yet clever alternative.
Boiler suits
Initially, when I thought of a boiler suit, Orange Is The New Black and Breaking Bad sprung to mind – but the more I see people wearing these, the more I need one in my life. They look so effortless and comfortable, and are easily compatible with either red lipstick and heels or a backpack and trainers. They are also winter-proof with being full-length and long-sleeved – you really can’t argue with the convenience and chicness exuding from this simply-chuck-on, all-in-one wonder.
