Having been born and bred in Northern Ireland it seems a curious thing to most folk that I’ve never tried a bag of Tayto Cheese & Onion crisps, so I decided in the interests of journalistic integrity that I should give them a go. The packaging of the crisp is well presented with yellow being the prominent colour and red the complimentary, a large potato headed fellow with very little body and white gloves beckons us into the pack. His eyes plead with us to open the packaging and release the trapped snacks inside, the eyes are kind and gentle with a hint of sadness.
As I open the pack of Tayto Cheese & Onion crisps the first thing I notice is the smell, or aroma, it’s pungent to say the least and lingers the whole time I’m eating the bag. I take a crisp, or potato chip for our American readers, out of the foil lined pack and put it in my mouth, as I crunch down I am immediately hit with 2 flavours, one being cheese and the other being…I think it’s onion. This is a multi-pack bag so it’s not too long before I’m finished and standing there with this smell still wafting in my face, I’m told the only way to get rid of it is to perform a ritual that involves a lot of folding and ultimately traps it in a triangle prison that I’ve crafted from the bag. I enjoyed my first bag of Tayto Cheese & Onion and will be looking forward to my next, until then though I have this pounding after taste in my mouth to remember it by and everyone else can smell it off me for a mile, so they can remember it too!
