The day finally arrived when Five Guys Belfast threw their doors open to the public, and by the look of the queues outside we greeted them with open arms (and open mouths). Walking in reminded me of my first Five guys I had in Washington DC about 5 years ago, as it looks pretty much the same as the stores in the US – red and white tiles, massive bags of monkey nuts (you can help yourself) and the smell of meat was in the air.
Bacon Double Cheese burger and a mix of Fries Five Guys Style and Cajun ordered, and received, in about 5 minutes and even helped to the table by a nice American gentlemen because I had a buggy – it was time to tuck in. The skin on fries are great with a real distinctive taste that the peanut oil they’re fried in gives them and the spicy Cajun style dusting gave them a hot taste if you prefer them a bit more caliente. My burger was excellent with the outer of the patty having formed a crust and the inside tender and succulent. There’s a proper meaty taste to the burger that was only complemented by the deep-fried streaky bacon and glued together with the cheese. It made for a burger that wasn’t as dense as I was expecting but was rather large and had me wondering if I would be able to finish it!
It should be noted that Five Guys is not a cheap option, A bacon double cheese burger was £8.75, small fries £2.75 and a coke £2.50. For a restaurant that doesn’t serve you at your table this is a lot, but you know what you’re paying so the decision is yours. This is a gourmet dining option but presented in a more casual way and I’d say that it perfect for getting a bite and a beer with friends on a night out where you want luxury tastes but a casual experience and are stuck for time.
