RemedyRemedy Café Bar is situated on Fountain Street opposite Voodoo in the space formerly known as La Boca.  It’s a truly central location that puts itself in an ideal location for shoppers to nip in for a bite to eat in the middle, or at the end, of a long day of shopping.  It can also be a fairly quiet part of town once the shops shut, although slowly but surely this area seems to be getting busier later and later, and having Voodoo opposite certainly can’t hurt.

From the moment we approached the staff were amazingly friendly and courteous, going completely out of their way to make us feel at ease, offering suggestions and answering any questions we had.  We had went on a Treat Ticket, but from what I could see there was plenty on offer and at reasonable prices too.

To start I had the wings, in a spicy buffalo sauce and I couldn’t have been happier with the crispy outside and moist inside, the sauce really working with the meat to spice up but not drown out what was a quality wing.  There were 4 wings and these were slightly larger than what I usually prefer but that didn’t go against them this time. My only complaint would be that £5.75 seems a tad pricy for a wing starter.

For main course I had a sirloin steak dinner with all the trimmings.  The steak was well cooked, juicy and tender.  There was a charred criss-cross effect on the surface and the juices flowed as I cut in – an extra sharp ‘steak’ knife was not needed, as it slid through the soft meat.  Great flavour and the creamy peppercorn sauce was a nice accompaniment too. The chips were home-made and fluffy inside, delicately crisp and browned on the outside.  The buttermilk onion ring was likewise.

We also managed to polish off a pretty decent bottle of Pint Gorgio during the meal that came in at around £15 a bottle, and a litre bottle of filtered water that costs £1 with 50p going to charity. All very good indeed.

We sat outside at the odd MDF style tables with wicker and aluminium chairs that were actually more functional and comfortable than they looked.  Inside though there is a nice intimate aesthetic at work, with lowered lighting (but not dark) and a large mirror running the entire back wall that helps open up the space. Wooden tables with modern furniture make for a space that seems suited to family gatherings and couples nights out alike.

All in all I would recommend Remedy Café Bar for a friendly meal with decent portions that are a cut above what you would expect.  They simply do what they do and from what I tasted, so far they are doing it exceptionally well.

#NItoiletWatch

We’re going to start including a ‘Toilet Watch’ section to reviews, as I’ve found so often that lovely places can be completely let down by the state of their toilets.  This puzzles me, as it’s still a part of the restaurant and speaks to our idea of how hygienic the place is. You can also keep us up to date with how the toilets of any bars/restaurants/theatres etc you’re at with the hashtag #NItoiletWatch on twitter so we can retweet it out to the public!

#NItoiletWatch

The toilets were the “one per person” variety and were clean and well maintained with toilet roll, soap and hand drying facilities all present and functional.  Good job guys!
