Yo! Sushi graciously invited PastieBap to the launch of their new Taste of Tokyo menu last night. Yo! (I can call them that, it’s a perk of the trade) pulled out all the stops to let us try every single one of 20 new dishes.
The idea was to capture the flavour of Tokyo’s young and vibrant food scene as well as to bring together the best of what the rest of Japan has to offer. Authentic Japanese food was their goal and having been over there myself, I can say that the guys (and gals) of Yo! Sushi have pretty much hit the nail on the head.
As I say there are over 20 new additions to the already packed menu but a few of them really stood out. From the selection of sushi and sides we were particularly fond of the Saba Sushi (cured mackerel with teriyaki glaze and spring onion on rice), the Dynomite Roll (fresh salmon, rayu chilli oil & avocado filled rice and nori roll with shallots, sriracha, mayonnaise & spring onion) and the Ginza Roll (fresh salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, caviar, chive filled roll with teriyaki, sriracha, mayonnaise and shallots). A special shout out also goes to the Potato Salad (potato, quick pickled vegetables, karashi mustard and mayonnaise dressing) . I thought we did a good potato salad over here but the Japanese version is damn good too.
Next up is our pick of the hot dishes. The Okonomiyaki Cabbage Pancake has lots of toppings and is suitably crispy and delicious. You can’t spell Okonomiyaki with out nom after all. The Buta No Kakuni showcases slow braised pork belly at it’s best, accompanied by daikon in an aromatic Sweet soy with rice. Lastly, if you consider yourself a chicken wing affectionado then you’ve got to try the Teba No Karaage. Crispy fried chicken wings in a full flavoured coating with lime. These are some of the best wings in town. They may not be as big and brash as their American style counter parts but they’re tasty little buggers none the less.
All in all its good to see that Yo! Sushi aren’t resting on their laurels and are keeping an eye on things across the water to make sure us lot over here can still eat like Emperors and crazy robot dragon unicorns with extra flashing lights.
