Before we get to the pick of the week I’m gonna run down a few other releases that caught my eye this week. Starting with a Robert De Niro film that doesn’t feature Zac Efron.

Once upon a time in America – This one’s a classic if you have the time for it. It’s 3 hours and 49 minutes. Take that Lord of the Rings! It has Bobby De Niro (pre Dirty Grampa) and James Woods in it so maybe that run time doesn’t seem so bad.

Once Upon a Time in America is a 1984 American epic crime drama film co-written and directed by Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone and starring Robert De Niro and James Woods. Based on Harry Grey’s novel The Hoods, it chronicles the lives of Jewish ghetto youths who rise to prominence in New York City’s world of organized crime. The film explores themes of childhood friendships, love, lust, greed, betrayal, loss, broken relationships, and the rise of mobstersin American society.

Poltergeist – The remake of the the Spielberg favorite didnt do quite as well as the original but this one has Sam Rockwell in it.

Sam Raimi (“Spiderman,” “Evil Dead”, “The Grudge”) and director Gil Kenan (“Monster House”) contemporize the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever

I like that it says contemporize. It’s as if the original was set in medieval times and needed bringing up to date for a young hip audience to find it relevant. Like I said before it has Sam Rockwell in it and he’s always good. Jared Harris is there too trying out his Irish accent.

Pick of the week – Natural Born Killers

Natural BornThis week’s pick is a 90’s classic. From distingushed director Oliver Stone staring Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis, Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Downey Jr comes this violent tale of 2 serial killers on a road trip. Throw Quintin Tarantino in the mix and you’ve got a movie.

A frenetic, bloody look at mass murder and the mass media, director Oliver Stone’s extremely controversial film divided critics and audiences with its mixture of over-the-top violence and bitter cultural satire. At the center of the film, written by Stone and Quentin Tarantino, among others, are Mickey (Woody Harrelson) and Mallory (Juliette Lewis), a young couple united by their desire for each other and their common love of violence. Together, they embark on a record-breaking, exceptionally gory killing spree that captivates the sensation-hungry tabloid media. -Fandango

If the synopsis sounds mental then take a look at this trailer. They just don’t make trailers like this anymore. There’s probably a reason for that, it’s incoherent at best. It does however give you a taste of what the movie’s like without actually giving anything away. Batman v Superman could learn a lot from this.
