We’ve long been fans of Belfast-based singer Amanda St John and her sassy brand of soul. Released today, her brand new single You Blew It was co-written in Nashville with world renowned producer Jon Tiven and is an Aretha inspired tune full of funky guitar and old school soul influences.
Catchy, lively and bold, You Blew It has inklings of more modern soul-songstresses such as Paloma Faith and Duffy, whilst still retaining that good old ’50s/60s classic sound. This is a definite one for the upcoming party season and is jam-packed with soulful harmonies and jazzy brass.
Amanda said of the new single:
“’You Blew It’ is a big band soul song. It’s about being in a relationship and reaching that breaking point where you’ve finally had enough of someone’s excuses. I’m basically saying that I can see through them now, they’re not a very nice person, don’t deserve any more of my time and they ‘Blew It’. It’s got a fun, feisty element to it too and it’s not be taken too seriously. It’s kinda like the internal conversations we have with ourselves but don’t communicate out loud!”
This is the lead single from Amanda St John’s upcoming debut album Grow, set for release in February 2016 and is a product of a 10 day writing and recording session in Nashville with Jon Tiven.
“Jon had sent me some instrumental ideas the week before [we met] so I went over the vocal melodies and sections that I had prepared and he loved them,” said Amanda. “We really ‘clicked’ musically and recorded three full songs in a few hours. It went so well that Jon asked me for the rest of my free time that week to keep writing. I already had appointments set up for the rest of the week, so I spent most evenings with him after my other meetings. I ended up getting up at 5am most days to prep for my studio sessions with Jon before starting my day. It was a busy 10 days indeed!”
St John is currently unsigned and is funding the release of her debut album by herself through the help of Pledge Music (a sort of Kickstarter for musicians) and at 80% of her goal already, you can help support the production of her upcoming album Grow by pre-ordering it now by clicking here.
