Founded in 1776, the Bolshoi Ballet is one of the world’s oldest and most well renowned ballet companies, based at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia. The Bolshoi exhibition which is coming to the Crumlin Road Gaol from 17th October until 13th December has been created especially for Belfast as part of the UK Russia Year of Culture and features costumes never before seen outside of Russia alongside designs that have been showcased in the fashion capitals of Europe.
Bolshoi: The Theatre of Costume
The Theatre of Costume will attempt to capture the drama of the Bolshoi as evocative images and sounds surround the costumes to help bring to life the breathtaking beauty and intrigue of Russian culture that has helped set the Bolshoi apart as one of the leading, world class arts companies for over 200 years. Alongside these Bolshoi artefacts, there will be the traditional costumes that tell the rich history of Russian peasant life and these designs have been echoed throughout the fashion world with glimpses gracing 20th century international catwalks. Whether you are a dance or fashion enthusiast or simply wanting to experience something different in the city, this exhibition offers a unique experience. This site specific installation will take place at Crumlin Road Gaol where innovative design will set off the magnificence and opulence of the costumes against the austere Victorian backdrop. The exhibition is not without historical continuity with the city: as far back as 1895 the relevance of Russian costume tradition was recognised when items were displayed in the Belfast Art and Industrial Exhibition, the last major event held in the White Linen Hall before it was demolished to make way for Belfast City Hall.
