Resident Evil 5

res evilHave you been waiting for another Resident Evil film? Has anyone? Well as it turns out, yes they have. Paul W. S. Anderson and his wife Milla Jovovich have been waiting on one and the paycheck that follows for both of them. Paul will be directing Milla (reprising her role as Alice) in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Hopefully it really is the final chapter although 2004’s film was subtitled Apocalypse, that’s pretty final and they managed to follow it with Extinction afterwards. I recon after this film he’ll follow up The Final Chapter with Resident Evil: Afterword and then Resident Evil: Dust Jacket. If only they’d chosen Paul Wes Anderson to direct instead. The films would have been a whole lot more watchable. Think Grand Budapest Hotel but with zombies. At the minute I think I’d rather just look at the posters than watch the films.

Mary Poppins

maryHave you been waiting for another Mary Poppins film? Has anyone? Well as it turns out, yes they have. Disney, have a sequel to Mary Poppins in the works with Emily Blunt said to be attached to play Miss Poppins. There are a few books regarding Poppins that Disney didn’t touch upon in their first bash at bringing Poppins to the screen so perhaps the script will start there. Maybe it picks up after Jane and Michael have been dragged away, ‘Up’ style, by their kites again. Maybe Mary has to get Bert out of a fix after the police find all those bodies under his chalk pavement drawings.

Transformers 5

dinotrux1Have you been waiting for another Transformers film? How many times can I do this before you stop reading? Paramount are making another Transformers film and this time it’ll be written by the guy who wrote Batman and Robin. Yes. THAT Batman and Robin. The one with the Bat nipples and Mr. Freeze. Transformers 4 has 18% on Rotten Tomatoes but pulled in over a billion dollars. It’s like crack. People know it’s bad but they just can’t help themselves. Rather than have an actual picture or a transformer I’ve opted for a picture of this thing from Netflix’s Dino Trux series. I think you’ll agree that at this point it’s much more interesting.

Gambit

gambit2Not great news this, Gambit hasn’t started shooting yet but it’s hit a bit of a snag. First we had Channing Tatum nearly leave the project and now its being left without a director.

Gambit is due for release in October 2016 but due to a scheduling conflict, Rupert Wyatt will no longer be directing. It seems that with script changes and an increased budget, Gambit will take longer to film than first thought. This unfortunately clashes with another project of Wyatt’s.

“I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project. I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film”.

Pacific Rim 2
dinotrux1
This thing was definitely in Pacific Rim.

First Gambit loses it’s director now this.  Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2 has been ‘halted indefinitely’ . Legendary pictures recently moved it’s movie making deal with Warner Brothers to Universal. Last year Universal was looking for something  franchisey to build on and Pacific Rim seemed like a good bet. It had good reviews but didn’t make a splash at the box office, still maybe there was something there worth investing in. Here’s where it gets weird though. 2015 has been an amazing year for Universal. They’ve made bucket loads of cash from movies like Jurassic World, Minions, 50 Shades of Grey, Furious 7. Now that they’re on top, Universal don’t need to take as many chances. Basically it looks like the success of Universals other films is stopping Pacific Rim 2 being made. It’s a far better idea to pump their cash into these other less ‘risky’ properties than take a chance on giving the big robot v monster film another go around. Incidentally it looks like something similar is happening with Tron 3 over at Disney. There’s only so much money to go around and now they have Marvel and Star Wars to add to their slate of Pixar and ‘Pirates’ films, there’s simply no room for Tron 3.

If you speak to Guillermo though he hasn’t given up hope. ‘We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I’m concerned, it’s not gone. We’re still on it.” He does add though that he may now shoot another movie before starting on Pacific Rim 2. As far as the studios are concerned though Pacific Rim 2 is not a sure thing. It looks like the cancelling of the apocalypse may have been canceled.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

20000People are calling this a reboot because people like to complain about all the sequels and reboots while at the same time going to see them. As far as I’m concerned it’s an adaptation of a famous novel that is long over due for a Hollywood movie. The last major movie was in 1954 so I’m not so sure we can really call this a reboot. If my computer isn’t working I don’t turn it off and then wait over 50 years to start it up again. Anyway there’s a new film coming and X-Men’s Bryan Singer is the man who’s bringing it to us. Captain Nemo is famously the son of an Indian Raja so hopefully they can bring us a Nemo who’s Indian this time.

Netflix

RIPDThis week we have a few to choose from. Team America has been added and is insanely re-watchable so there’s always that. R.I.P.D. has also appeared. If like me you dodged this one in the cinema but still like the idea of Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges shooting ghosts then maybe you could check this out without having to pay the price of a cinema ticket. There’s also the Fright Night (2011) which I never got around to checking out. If all else fails though, how about Return to Oz? It’s full of Jim Henson creatures like a talking Moose head, a pumpkin scarecrow thing and a Fairuza Balk thing. Jim Henson sure knew how to make a wacky creature!
