The Octogeek (Geektopus?) has 8 arms for gathering geek news. One for each day of the week and one left over for you know, octopus stuff.
There’s a new season been ordered for everyone’s favorite SSR Agent. ABC have ordered new Agent Carter, expected to air in the US in January. There will be 10 episodes this time instead of last season’s 8. She’s finished mourning Cap’ and things will be changing from the New York setup. During the Houston’s Comicpalooza, Atwell had this to say.
“the showrunners really want to move it forward. So it’s going to be set in L.A., and with 10 episodes it’s going to be a very glamorous, dark world of 1940s Los Angeles.”
If you weren’t distracted by Channing Tatum’s abs in Magic Mike you might have heard that he’ll be donning the homeless man’s flasher coat and fingerless gloves, to play Gambit in a standalone movie for Fox. Again with Gambit, the last we saw him on screen was in an awful Wolverine movie that featured Wil. I. Am (am I spelling the correctly? I hope not) in a cowboy hat. This movie, like the deadpool one, seems to be completely separate from that Wolverine: Origins nonsense. According to an interview he did with Empire Magazine, the Gambit movie will be an origin story too.
“Josh Zetumer just turned in the first draft of the script, and it’s killer. None of us were sure how he was going to deal with the X-Men world. But we’re going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies. It’s always about saving the world (Laughs), but maybe we’re going to shift things a little bit. There’s so many ways you can take [an origin story]. You could do it like Batman Begins, or a different take and go the Guardians of the Galaxy route. All I can say is, I’m super excited.”
With a character like Gambit you kind of need an origin story. You can’t really just say he’s a mutant and then start running with it. People know who Spider-Man is but they don’t generally know who Gambit is. A Cajun, Mutant, Thief, X-Man is a complicated character with an interesting backstory. It’s smart to explore the Assassin’s and Thieves Guilds before touching on his relationship with the X-Men. C-Tates (did I get away with calling him that?) seems to have had a good idea of the character beforehand so hopefully they can pull this off.
“I love Gambit….I grew up in the South; my father’s from Louisiana. We’d go to New Orleans and I heard all the dialects. It felt so different from the rest of America; it has its own ancient culture. So I identified with that. And he always felt the most real of the X-Men to me. He’s kind of a tortured soul and he’s not a good guy. But he’s not a bad guy, either. He walks his own path. And of course he plays cards and drinks and is a martial-arts badass!”
And finally to wrap up the Marvel news, we have a new international trailer for Fantastic Four. There’s a few flashes of new material but nothing groundbreaking. If you want to check it out you can find it here.
