A sold-out crowd settled into the Theatre At The Mill in Newtownabbey on Saturday night for one of the first few nights of the ‘David Meade BrainMan’ tour, as it winds its way to the Ulster Hall and beyond. Whilst the nature of the show means I can’t reveal too much, lest I spoil it, I can reveal 2 things:
- It is very funny
- It is utterly baffling
I have seen Derren Brown before and really enjoyed his show, so when he started off by describing himself as “something similar, but a good deal cheaper!” it set the tone and expectations of what was to come. David says he’s a mentalist, which basically means he can Mindfreak you at any time, ” I can make you wet the bed” was a threat that was dished out to rowdy audience members on various occasions, that was thankfully never acted on! However, minds were read, numbers predicted, and deepest secrets where revealed. For some though they declined Davids offer and he moved on, secrets still intact. He had a section that mimicked a psychic medium but contacting live people (just in case) that made for a fascinating and thought-provoking watch. My highlight of the night was when he was able to tell one lady the name of her childhood imaginary friend “This is someone you’ve not seen for years, in fact, it’s someone you’ve never seen” and when he knew that one gentleman’s claim to fame was his starring role as a hand on Game Of Thrones!
I always think it’s a really great show when you talk about it the whole way home and we found ourselves doing exactly that, but ultimately couldn’t even come up with even a plausible theory of how it was all done, and as someone who is a big fan of magic, I’m happy with that.
‘David Meade BrainMan’ Is touring the country until May at least, check his site for details and ticket info.
