Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has returned to Belfast’s Grand Opera House for an unforgettable evening filled with vibrant colour, infectious music, and non-stop energy. Starring former X Factor winner Joe McElderry as the Pharaoh, Adam Filipe as Joseph, and Christina Bianco as the Narrator, this show promised to be a treat.
From the moment the lights dimmed, the atmosphere was electric. The audience was buzzing, knowing they were about to experience something special—and they got just that. The child actors were exceptional, playing a more prominent role in the production than ever before. They even led several songs, including the fun and lively Benjamin Calypso, which was a refreshing and welcome twist to the usual format.
Adam Filipe, who played Joseph, brought a quiet yet captivating charisma to the role, though he occasionally got a bit lost amid the exuberance and chaos of his on-stage brothers. However, Christina Bianco, as the Narrator, truly stole the spotlight. From start to finish, she was flawless, effortlessly switching between multiple roles (including Jacob and Potiphar’s wife) with impeccable comedic timing. Her performance was nothing short of masterful—commanding attention without ever feeling over the top.
When it came to Joe McElderry as the Pharaoh, the vibrant staging and bold set design were a showstopper. With flashing lights, a huge “Welcome to Fabulous Egypt” sign reminiscent of Las Vegas, and McElderry’s energetic performance, the audience was absolutely captivated. The King had arrived, and the crowd loved it.
From hoedowns and can-cans to cheerleading routines and the Charleston, this high-speed production of Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat took us on a whirlwind ride through a kaleidoscope of musical styles. The perfect blend of humour, heart, and dynamic choreography made for a truly enjoyable night out—an escape into the colourful world of Joseph and his dreams.
