Looking for something fun to do with the kids or just an adventurous day out this weekend? Why not #ChooChooseWhitehead? Whitehead Railway Museum, which opened just last year, is open from Thursday to Saturday each week.

The five-gallery museum is located in Whitehead on the Causeway Coastal Route, just 15 miles from Belfast. You can marvel at the giants of steam, hear the story of how the railways revolutionised society, see, smell and hear restoration work in progress in the Railway Preservation Society of Ireland workshops. You can pull the levers in the signal cabin and climb on board and explore some of the historic carriages and locomotives which are on display.

Whitehead Railway Museum is just a 10-minute walk from Whitehead NIR station, so you can make it a rail day by stepping from a modern NIR train to see the historic trains of yesteryear. Journey back to the age of steam – you won’t be disappointed.

Treat yourself to a coffee, tea or a lunch in the period-style Edwardian Tea Room. Think of the classic movie “Brief Encounter” as you enjoy your refreshments in the magnificent surroundings of a traditional railway buffet.

The Museum is open every Thursday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm.

Conducted tours are available at 11am, 1pm, 2:30pm

The Tea Room will be open until 3:45pm.

Ticket prices:

  • Adult: £7
  • Child: £5
  • Concession: £6

  • Under 3-year old’s go free.
