Steam Saturday was in full swing (and is on every Saturday in August) at the Whitehead Railway Museum when we arrived. With trains departing every 15 minutes we were soon through the gorgeous Edwardian Tea House and sitting on a real steam train ready for the off. The conductor came along and punched the tickets of my very excited sons, Max and Alex as we puffed back and forth along the dedicated line in Whitehead. The boys couldn’t have been happier, and they nearly made more noise than the locomotive as they pointed out all the things they noticed. The train ride was only really the start of it as the whole museum was yet to be explored. Our knowledgeable volunteer guide was able to take us through the great history of the railway line and shows us actual trains and an example of the cross-border service from many years ago. The kids loved seeing all the old trains as well as the miniature toy train and dress-up box. I could have listened to the stories of our guide all day telling us about working on the railways but was ushered over to put on a top hat and act as a passenger for my 3-year-old in the miniature train!

The whitehead Railway Museum is a great day out for the whole family and promises to have something for everyone young and old whatever you choo-choo-choose to do!
