Due to take place at The Lyric Theatre’s Naughton Studio, New Speak: Re-Imagined has gone online instead to help bring this timely theatre piece to life.

An initiative inspired by the now cancelled Lyric Theatre and Bruiser Theatre Company’s co-production of 1984, there’s something poetic about the works now being forced to go online due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Each artist has taken their original piece and successfully crafted it into something that works online instead of on the stage, with the content being changed to address the current situation.

Now a series of weekly instalments being hosted online by five exciting local artists, Episode 1 brings a refreshing mix of humour, introspection and entertainment. I thoroughly enjoyed each and every artist’s interpretation of the theme, and the juxtaposition of dance, music, performance and humour really struck a chord with me.

The commissioned pieces of work are: Amadan Ensemble, Dominic Montague, Katie Richardson, Lata Sharma, and Zara Janahi (Ajendance), and directed by Emily Foran and Oisín Kearney.

At a time where the future doesn’t look too bright at all, New Speak: Re-Imagined is a welcome break from the monotony, and genuinely something to look forward to watching each week. I was almost crying with laughter at Amadan Ensemble’s The Great British Lockdown and Katie Richardson’s Enthrall – Songs of Resilience was a particularly poignant piece to finish things off.
