Let’s just ignore the Jack Black version and remember that Gulliver is a really great story. So we’re glad to see a production of it being put on by Big Telly and The MAC.  They’re doing a bit of a ‘twist’ on it too which generally can go one of two ways, but given The MAC and Big Telly’s track record we’re going to assume means it will be even better. Anyway guys enough of my jobber jabber, on with the press release!

This month (29 Sept – 17 Oct) Big Telly Theatre Co and the MAC will premiere Gulliver, a hilarious homage that couldn’t be more different than Swift’s original. Audiences can expect a fast-paced show packed with lots of laughs, incorporating amazing projection and a new musical score.

The grown-up comedy tells the tale of Gulliver’s return home.  He’s back, but will his family cope with all his strange new ways?  From invasions by little people, to a new baby with interesting developmental traits, Gulliver and his family have to learn to live together in a strange new world, where weird is the new normal.

This is the MAC and Big Telly’s first co-production.  Earlier this year, the company enjoyed runaway success with One Sandwich Short of a Genius, its previous show at the venue.

Zoe Seaton, Big Telly Theatre Company said “To tackle a classic story, by Jonathan Swift no less, was slightly daunting to begin with but we had a lot of fun with the script, imagining what Gulliver would have actually been like when he sailed back into town after 25 years away from his family. We were interested in what the impact on the family would be of having such an extraordinary father.

“Our six actors have been great to work with. Rehearsals have begun and at the moment, we’re working through the story, from the flash-back scenes of his return from different places to the conflic in the present tense as he tries to impose a new regime on anyone who’ll listen.  We’re working closely with a fight choreographer, film maker and composer to make a piece of theatre which is visual and action packed, contains satire and wit, and lots of laugh out loud moments.”

Tickets are on sale now from themaclive.com starting from just £12.  The show runs from 29 Sept – 17 October at the MAC.
