I came across Belfast Soup on facebook recently and instantly thought what a great idea it was!

The concept is simple, for a small donation, attendees will receive soup, salad, bread and a vote. They’ll have the chance to hear 4 presentations from ordinary people who want to help make their community better, and can eat, network, talk about ideas, enjoy music and art, and finally vote for their favourite presentation. At the end the winner of the ballot then takes home all of the money raised to carry out their project.

Belfast Soup

The idea comes from Detroit where Detroit Soup has been a roaring success, and moving from one city that’s still recovering from the fall of it’s industrial enterprises to a city that’s still recovering from a fall of it’s own (the troubles) seems like a good fit, these are two cities that are trying to grow from their ashes. This is about real people that are trying to make a real difference on the ground level through this form of micro-funding.  Belfast Soup has already had one meeting in May and seeks to replicate that on a monthly basis. They say ‘Feed the body feed the mind’ it seems that Belfast Soup is trying to do both!
