Amazon is racking up the wins so far. What’s new to stream this week then, will Netflix fight back? Amazon seem to be on a nostalgia trip for a start and Netflix is bring back a quirky drama for a second season. Lets get to it with the honourable mentions, shall we?

Netflix

Fargo (TV, season 2) – Season 2 is just as good as the first which was a solid show. I’d recommend giving this a go if you haven’t seen it. Ted Danson, Patrick Wilson and Kirsten Dunst lead a very capable cast. Nick Offerman is in there too.

The Fault In Our Stars – Not for everyone but still a notable release, coming in at around 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley), a 16-year-old cancer patient, meets and falls in love with Gus Waters (Ansel Elgort), a similarly afflicted teen from her cancer support group. Hazel feels that Gus really understands her. They both share the same acerbic wit and a love of books, especially Grace’s touchstone, “An Imperial Affliction” by Peter Van Houten. When Gus scores an invitation to meet the reclusive author, he and Hazel embark on the adventure of their brief lives.

Amazon

Troma’s War – If you like nonsense from the 80’s then maybe this one’s for you. It’s from the guys behind THE TOXIC AVENGER and CLASS OF NUKE ’EM HIGH. I’ll let the trailer do the talking

Robot Jox – Somewhere in the same vein as Toma’s War, this one is more late 80’s nonsense but it’s about fighting robots. Nice work Amazon. This truly was the golden age of cinema.

The Dark Knight Rises – A pretty sizable release here for Amazon. Batman is just bad-ass. Any other time and he would have been pick of the week. Look at him there, standing on that police car. He don’t give a flip. Unfortunately there is a somewhat more worthy contender.

Streaming Pick of the Week

Amazon – Edge of Tomorrow

Amazon Win Headlock

Netflix didn’t have a chance this week. Amazon had 2 strong entries but Edge of Tomorrow beats out the Batman. Firstly because most people have seen The Dark Knight Rises by now and secondly because a lot of people missed EOT at the cinema. It was considered a bit of a flop even though critics loved it (91% on Rotten Tomatoes) as well as ordinary movie goers (Audience score 90%).  Apparently a lot of people went to see ‘The Fault in our Stars’ instead and Edge of Tomorrow (or Live. Die. Repeat. as it’s also known) missed out on becoming the hit that perhaps it could have. You can head over to Netflix and watch ‘The Fault in our Stars’ if you want but I’ll be checking out EOT on Amazon to see what all the fuss is about.

When Earth falls under attack from invincible aliens, no military unit in the world is able to beat them. Maj. William Cage (Tom Cruise), an officer who has never seen combat, is assigned to a suicide mission. Killed within moments, Cage finds himself thrown into a time loop, in which he relives the same brutal fight — and his death — over and over again. However, Cage’s fighting skills improve with each encore, bringing him and a comrade (Emily Blunt) ever closer to defeating the aliens.

Another painful loss for The Netflix Newt. Come on buddy. I believe in ya! You’ll get him next time, I’m sure of it!
