This week we have Gambit, Captain America, X-Men, Zoolander 2 and Harrison Ford has been talking Star Wars. Lots to take care of this week as well as some sparkly new pictures and a trailer for Gods of Egypt. First up though is the ragin’ Cajun.
Gambit
Last we heard, Gambit was looking a director after Rupert Wyatt left a few months back. Well Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, The Bourne Identity) has stepped on board. Considering the film is slated for October next year It could be a tight squeeze to get it out in time. Producer Simon Kinberg was able to give us a hint as to the direction of the movie though.
“Gambit will have its own different flavour and tone to it [than other X-Men movies], will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way”.
So sexy Simon, so sexy. I think with Channing Tatum’s involvement we can all look forward to a sort of Magic Mike with a Southern accent and explosions.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
A few little womp rat sized nuggets of information here. Actually now that I think about it, Luke used to ‘bull’s-eye womp rats’ in his ‘T-16’. I recall him saying they’re ‘not much bigger than 2 meters’. Hmm. A bit big for a nugget. It’s nice to see they use metric system though. Imperial never was the rebel’s style. Anyway it’s best I leave that metaphor and just get on with it. We’ve learned this week that Princess Lea will no longer be Princess, instead opting for ‘General’ Lea. That explains why she’s not included on all that Disney Princess merchandise then.
Harrison Ford has also been talking to EW and has been giving his thoughts on where Han Solo fits into the new film. Ford has famously been apathetic in the past when it comes to Han. On a Reddit AMA he was asked by one user to finally settle that age old question. Who shot first? Han or Greedo? His response?
‘I don’t know and I don’t care.’
He’s signed on for the film though so he must have some place in his heart for the old space pirate. He’s older now and a bit wiser and looks to be serving as a sort of mentor to Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega). Does this mean that Han Solo the scoundrel is no more?
“No, there’s not an abandoning of the character. He does not aspire to the position of Obi-‘Ben’ Kenobi, nor do I aspire to be some New Age Alec Guinness. His development is consistent with the character, and there are emotional elements which have occasioned his growth. […] We spend a lot more time on his failure to master basic skills, like accounting.
Ah accounting. Tricky. If there’s something Star Wars needs its more accountants and politicians.
And accounting for his own behavior. There’s a lot of the rogue still left in Solo. Some things don’t change. [Han] was always the cynical member of the original characters. While we were invited to engage on the questions of some pretty arcane mysteries — the Force and the mythology that surrounds it — he was the guy who said, ‘What? Huh? Come on.’ It’s what made the interplay between the characters work. There was a callow youth, a beautiful princess, a wise old warrior, and there was a smart-ass.
X-Men: Age of Apocalypse
Just a little update to say that we can expect an X-Men: AoA teaser to finally reach us in December attached to the behemoth that is Star Wars.
“Our first trailer will be on Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s our first thing out there so it is somewhat of a teaser but it’s certainly longer than a minute and it has a ton of cool stuff in it.” – Simon Kinberg
Thats the same Simon Kinberg that said Gambit was going to be sexy.
Zoolander 2
Zoolander is back and the whole crew is pretty much there with the addition of Penelope Cruz. Its High fashion and High Jinks in what’s weirdly called the ‘Payoff Trailer’.
