It’s official, we’re in October and fall is in full swing.

In the past few weeks we’ve gradually welcomed all the things we know and love about this season: Costa’s seasonal bonfire-themed drinks; leaves scattering the streets like confetti; cosying up in our teddy coats due to the inevitable temperature drop – and subsequently complaining about said chilliness which is eventually going to take over our lives for the next six months.

But with this inevitable change in weather comes the opportunity to layer up – and from that, comes more experimentation and versatility with our personal style and this season’s major trends.

One of the strongest trends I’ve noticed over the past two weeks is corduroy. It is essentially a thicker, more rigid form of velvet which was first introduced in the 1700s. Yep, you heard me. The 1700s.

It then resurfaced again in the 1960s and ‘70s, and this AW is hugely influenced by these eras.

A lot of pieces circulating the high street stores like pinafores, dungarees, co-ords and trousers are perfect for layering textures, mixing colours and ultimately making the most of the That ‘70s Show vibes.

Corduroy is a fresh, much-needed departure from our everyday denim and leather that we have probably exhausted over the summer period. It also adds a luxurious touch with the velvety-suede look and feel.

Also, because of the different variations of thick and thin corduroy, you can make your outfit as subtle or as bold as you like. To add another level of interest, clash this texture with opposing ones such as a faux fur coat, cable knit jumper or silk blouse; or with different coloured corduroy pieces to embrace this concrete trend.

Here are some of the best picks from the high street:
