I know how some people feel about Soft play centres, as Bart Simpson would politely put it “Gosh forsaken heck holes”. And I can understand the point of view, they can be loud, they can look garish, the kids can be rowdy. But not me, I love a soft play centre, in fact, I’m a card-carrying member of Funky Monkeys and have been since Max was 1 year old.  I’ve been taking the 2 boys every Monday for the last 3+ years and with them both going to pre-school now that tradition is being broken, and so it got me thinking (and maybe feeling a little wistful) about why it is I like them so much.  I think it basically comes down to the fact that it gives the boys a freedom to do as they want in a place where I feel they’re safe.  There are not many spaces that fill that bill for me. And of course, accidents do happen, we’ve had our share of bust lips and scraped knees, but on the whole, I feel they’re safe. I love to watch them moving around freely as they want to, interacting with other kids, climbing, and exploring and generally being kids but with less worry for me, especially not with our notorious NI weather! So I’ll take all the ‘bad’ points in exchange for that feeling of security, until that fateful day when I hear the words I’m dreading “Daddy we don’t want to go to the soft play anymore”.

Oh and you can have a cup of coffee and a tray bake there too, which is always a bonus!
