Oh boy did it feel good to be doing proper blogger’y things again! It felt even better when surrounded by the beautiful surroundings of Glenarm Castle (and walled garden) on a warm sunny day!

Our first ‘assignment’ back was for the kids too, and they had an absolute ball driving Mini Land Rovers around the purpose-built track.

But let’s go back to the start: we arrived and had a very brief induction and safety talk, which was also helpfully drawn out on a big board so that even the kids could understand it.

Apparently, this has been 4 years in the making and the whole COVID lockdown was what finally allowed the time for it all to come to fruition.

So, in partnership with Charles Hurst Land Rovers Belfast and NFU, they have constructed a rather rugged course, especially for these tough little vehicles to traverse and thoroughly put them through their paces.

Uphill, over bridges, tight corners, through the wildlife, and of course through a waterlogged area – the course has it all. There’s even a real-life land rover for you to compare how spot on these mini replicas are.

The kids properly drive these things, and you walk along beside (guarding your ankles) with an all-important ‘kill switch’ in hand waiting ready in case it’s needed. Or just using it to see the confusion on their faces when their Land Rover stops working and they can’t work out why. But of course, I would never do that 😉

Overall, it took about 45 minutes with a few laps around the area, a few small crashes, and some gentle ahem coaching (shouting) from me, but after the first go-round they had pretty much got the hang of it.

There’s also a wee service station to pull over into for those all-important shots for the ‘gram to make all the other kids (and parents) jealous.

A highly recommended outdoor activity that’s perfectly suited for families and social distancing, and of course, a visit to the walled garden and a coffee at the Grounds coffee shop all make for a great day out for everyone too.
