Tucked away a the end of the cobbled street that houses The Duke Of York is a lovely little restaurant called Hadski’s. It’s a blink and you’ll miss it affair, and I call it lovely because having eaten there before I feel that descriptor appropriate.  Hadskis is a elegantly long affair with lots of floor length glass windows to look out while the world passes you by, you dine off white table clothes and sip from long stem wine glasses.  It’s modern and chic but with a classy touch which actually feels a cut above what it’s prices are.  We went in with a baby and I have to take my hat off to the staff for how excellent they were with both us and him.  They literally could not do enough, which was lovely, sometimes you’re not quite sure how families will be received in this style of restaurant.  The full a la carte menu was on offer, but since it was lunch I decided to try their very reasonably price £6.50 menu, I had been to Hadskis before and tried some of their fish dishes (amazing) which were delicious so I was interested to see what their more modest fare was like.

I opted for the rump steak and chips with bearnaise sauce.  To be honest I wasn’t expecting much, especially at that price. But out came a decent size lump of meat, seasoned and cooked perfectly, that was tender and juicy on the inside, and seared with flavour on the outside. The presentation was immediately appealing, a large clean white plate with chips in a small copper pan and a cute textured drizzle pot for the sauce. The sauce was tangy and smooth, a nice accompaniment to both the steak and the chips.  The chips where rustic looking and home cut, i’d also guess they were double or triple fried based on colour and crispness, they had great character and it was a good size portion.  All in all it was very good dish and one that I would return for, there’s a lot to be said about a good steak and chips, especially when it’s being done this well on a less expensive cut of meat! Service, food, price and surroundings all scored very high on this trip to Hadski’s, a lovely wee place for a bite to eat, and I really do mean that bit about it being lovely.
