It’s Monday, which usually means that we take the opportunity to share something that makes us happy with you lovely lot! This week we have a new EP and music video by the ever-prolific Belfast singer/songwriter Rebekah Fitch to share.

You may remember her dulcet tones from our previous Tune For The Weekend posts like this one, this one, this one and this one, but now the Belfast local who is currently studying music in Durham is back with her debut EP Broken Mind to show you what she’s really made of. After a successful launch at The Belfast Barge last month, Rebekah is currently doing a mini tour of the UK with her new music.

Starting strong with latest single A Love So Crazy, Fitch has a bit of fun with this one, belting out the chorus and adding some upbeat claps to give this a real funky feeling. Some melodic piano is backed up with a bit of a Middle Eastern influence, making this one tune that we just can’t get out of our heads. My favourite track of the album, and one which shows Fitch going in a much more mature and unique direction, this is a real winner for me, showing just how talented Fitch is.

Modern, laidback and sombre to start, second track Fake Smiles compounds the central theme of mental distress and anguish (the EP is called Broken Mind after all) with it’s slow beat, wailing instruments and echoing voices, as does Not Myself  which we previously described as “buzzing with electronic experimentation and slight distortion to give a sense of confusion to mirror the meaning of the song.”

Final song Human Condition(ing) is a unique one, with record scratches and samples coming together to make a tune which is simultaneously uneasy and relaxing, a huge feat for anyone. One thing which Rebekah is very good at (aside from singing, obviously) is writing ear-worms, and despite it’s almost incongruent nature, Human Condition(ing) doesn’t fail to get stuck in your head just like the rest of the EP.

A real triumph of song writing, singing and production, Broken Mind is a debut EP to be proud of, and we can’t wait to see what else Rebekah Fitch has in store.

Listen to the EP now on Spotify, on Soundcloud or buy it on iTunes; or follow Rebekah Fitch on Facebook for more great music.
